In the midst of these winter days, cooped up in warm blankets, I am irresistibly lost in my reveries of the warm summer sun. It is as if I want the summer back to feel alive again. I am waiting for that warm breeze to put spring back in my heels so that I can breathe again. Now let’s confront the problem hiding behind all my flowery excuses for being lazy. I am a big-time procrastinator.
Do you fail to keep the promises you make to yourself? I often do. Then I feel guilty about it. I don’t know if there is anybody out there who still reads blogs. But nevertheless, if there is still somebody who would find this blog in their hour of need, when they are feeling guilty about their procrastinating nature, this is for you. I, myself, am trying to fight this procrastination monster now as well. So, let’s face it together.
The word procrastination comes from the Greek word Akrasia, which could be loosely translated as doing something against our better judgment. That clarifies the guilt trap. It is easy to blame yourself for being lazy when you procrastinate, but I think you should show yourself some compassion as well. Try to understand the reason why you are delaying that ‘work’ that you are supposed to do. In most cases, it is some negative emotion associated with the task that is hindering you from doing it. It could be that you are anxious about it, or it could be your lack of preparation, or even that unnecessary imposter syndrome. Well, it could be anything. But figuring out that would give you so much clarity on why you are procrastinating. Once you do that, you are already one step ahead in the game.
Now take up that one task you have been delaying forever. Ask yourself why you have been avoiding it. Take the first step toward addressing that reason. Confront it. Remember: “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today”( Abraham Lincoln).
I know the struggle. I see you. But let’s make it happen. One day at a time.
Also, I would advise anybody who feels they need professional help to seek it!
